Throughout history and across cultures, humans have relied on mourning rituals such as funerals and ancestor worship to make peace with losing their loved ones. While these traditional practices have provided comfort for generations, in today’s globalized and changing world, it can be challenging to attend rituals tied to specific places or keep sentimental belongings through life's transitions.

Leveraging digital creation as a new mourning ritual, Memory Land allows people to curate digitized belongings of their lost loved ones and stay connected with their cherished memories no matter where they are. Imagine walking through a virtual garden, every bloom and path recalling a memory of a loved one — this is the essence of Memory Land. It empowers users to create customizable digital memorial spaces ranging from childhood homes to family vacation destinations. These digital sanctuaries allow cherished belongings and memories to be accessible across time and space. Users can scan objects in 3D, upload photographs, or utilize AI to regenerate objects that have already been lost.

Consider Sarah, who lost her grandmother — a keen gardener. Through Memory Land, Sarah transforms her grief into a beautiful digital garden, each plant serving as a tribute to her grandmother’s passion. She uploads photos of her grandmother’s favorite cactus, scans her grandmother’s trowel into a 3D model, and saves audio clips of her grandmother’s gardening tips. Sarah’s digital garden serves as a personal, evolving memorial for her to visit regularly. By focusing on reconstructing space and objects instead of human forms, Memory Land helps users maintain a healthy emotional distance while honoring their loved ones.

Memory Land makes use of the digital world as a new medium for mourning that adapts adeptly to our modern, often transient lives. Moreover, by facilitating space and object design, the app transforms mourning into a more creative hence active process, guiding people to claim agency amid vulnerability and therefore heal effectively. Though some moments from the past may naturally fade, others are meant to be treasured. Memory Land helps people preserve what’s theirs to keep in a way that is accessible and healthy.
