"Please help! My grandma is out of medicine. She lives in a tiny village alone!" This is just one of the hundreds of requests the "Rural Fever-Relief Initiative" volunteer group received online after China ended its zero-COVID policy at the end of 2022. Thousands of volunteers, without prior experience, devoted themselves to the campaign, and medicines were shipped by donors across China. Everyone is passionate, motivated, and ready to help. But the real challenge is, "How do we deliver the medicine to people in need timely"?
We, a team of three designers joined the volunteer team, trying to address the issue with the power of human-centered design. We conducted in-depth interviews with a large group of stakeholders, including patients, donors, and volunteers, to land on the core problem with the minimum time. Our strategy is to assist inexperienced volunteers by creating clear workflows and instructions with an APP. It’s not only a solution for “Now”, but it’s also a vision for “Future”.
Our product facilitates medicine delivery to vulnerable groups in rural China, bridging a critical healthcare gap and achieving a 93% user satisfaction rate. By leveraging technology, it efficiently matches donors with patient needs, reducing case completion time from 180 minutes to 6 minutes and assist calls from 15 to 4 for the entire process, garnering strong support and recognition from volunteers.
The app provides a framework with utility extending beyond COVID-19, offering potential for resource distribution in various disasters and enhancing overall resource management.
