The Challenge

Norlys, Denmark's largest integrated energy and telecommunications company, needed to create a 2023 sustainability report that complies with the upcoming EU reporting directive (CSRD) and sustainability standards (ESRS). As a cooperative owned by over 800,000 members, Norlys carries a unique responsibility towards its owners and the broader community. The challenge was to develop a report structure that meets stringent legal requirements while being clear, accessible, and visually engaging for all stakeholders.

The Execution

To address this challenge, Norlys meticulously designed their 2023 sustainability report with a focus on visual appeal and clarity. The report was structured in accordance with CSRD guidelines ahead of the 2025 mandate, ensuring proactive compliance. A double materiality analysis identified 16 significant topics and 8 double materiality issues, forming the report's foundation.

The report featured a playful and colorful design, incorporating a mix of photos and illustrations to bring the content to life. Visual elements such as images, colors, and shapes were used to break up dense text and create an inviting reading experience. Graphics and diagrams simplified complex data, presenting it in an easily understandable manner. The report's design included a clear structure with intuitive navigation, distinct headings, and well-organized sections, guiding readers through the content logically.

The Solution

Norlys' 2023 sustainability report exemplifies a proactive approach to compliance and transparency. By aligning the report with CSRD requirements ahead of time, Norlys demonstrated foresight and dedication to regulatory adherence. The integration of playful and colorful visual elements, combined with data visualization techniques, significantly enhanced the report’s readability and engagement, making complex information accessible to all stakeholders.
