Gradient Living is a visionary residential project designed to revitalize Senri New Town, Osaka, by fostering social connections and bridging generational divides. Originally planned in the 1960s, the community now faces demographic polarization, with an aging local population and an influx of younger college students. This divide, compounded by digital lifestyles and urban isolation, has disrupted social cohesion, highlighting the need for transitional spaces that connect home and urban life.

Our design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese housing, incorporating principles of spatial contrast and smooth transitions to create engaging semi-public and semi-private spaces. By rethinking the relationships between urban, communal, and private environments, Gradient Living seeks to enrich the daily experiences of residents while fostering a sense of belonging.

At the urban scale, the design introduces an “urban corridor” that links the central subway station with key community facilities, such as the post office and local shops. This expanded green space replaces underutilized structures with higher-density buildings, providing dynamic, public areas that encourage interaction and activity.

In the communal spaces, we integrate gradient transitions inspired by Japanese gardens, allowing indoor environments to seamlessly blend with landscaped outdoor areas. These layered spaces create opportunities for diverse social activities, promoting interaction among residents.

Inside the buildings, transitional zones are emphasized. Enlarged entry cores and spiral circulation routes form semi-public and semi-private spaces that encourage shared experiences while maintaining individual privacy.

At the unit level, the design incorporates modular box units and subtle height variations, drawing inspiration from traditional tatami room layouts. These features create open yet defined spaces that balance functionality with comfort. A wooden interface along the corridor serves as both furniture and a privacy buffer, enhancing connections between the interior and exterior.

Through these thoughtful spatial strategies, Gradient Living redefines the boundaries between private and public life, creating an inclusive and harmonious environment that fosters community and enriches daily living.
