AREP has repurposed the historic industrial plant on Zhichun Road in Beijing, the birthplace of the "Dongfanghong-1" satellite, into the HYGEA Innovation Center. Blending modern medical technology with cultural heritage, the design showcases the theme of "connecting history and shaping the future." It respects and celebrates the beauty of the building’s original structure while introducing new functionalities. Newly constructed elements are deliberately separated from the original structure, preserving the industrial heritage and creating a striking contrast between modern design and historical textures. Existing structures are retained and enhanced with modern elements, such as silver aluminum space capsule-inspired cladding, forming a harmonious interplay with the building’s historical character. The floors, walls, and structures maintain a raw, industrial aesthetic, while red walls, ecological green walls, and water features add a balanced vibrancy that immerses visitors in cultural ambiance. The project minimizes demolition and reconstruction, preserving walls and primary structures to honor history while allowing flexibility for future functionality. This approach ensures sustainability and adaptability over time. The outdoor landscape respects the natural environment, retaining existing trees and integrating new and old elements. The design reduces energy consumption and fosters a healthy indoor environment, embodying the principle of harmony with nature while laying the foundation for sustainable development infrastructure.
