The Liangma River, named after its historical role in the Ming Dynasty as a royal horse-washing site, lies at the heart of Beijing’s foreign exchange and CBD area. Spanning 80.13 hectares and stretching 5.575 kilometres, the project leverages its location in China’s political and cultural hub to create a “Landmark River” — an international-style waterfront and a golden name card for the capital.
Guided by public participation and government-enterprise collaboration, the project transforms urban development from turning its back on the river to embracing it. This shift revitalizes the riverfront through ecological restoration, cultural preservation, and functional integration, fostering vibrancy and social interaction along the waterfront. Ecological water management and sustainable planning aim to establish the Liangma River as a green legacy with enduring cultural significance.
The initiative focuses on achieving “four first-class” objectives (design, concept, management, and operation) and adheres to “five insistences” (prime virtue standards, planning leadership, systematic thinking, public-centric approaches, and integrated development). It implements “seven projects”: riparian improvement, bridge renovation, slow-walk connectivity, landscape lighting, river-lake connectivity, tourism navigation, and cultural enhancement. Together, these efforts deliver economic, social, and ecological benefits, positioning Liangma River as a model for river revitalization, urban renewal, and the integrated development of culture, tourism, and consumption. The revitalized Liangma River exemplifies high-quality development, showcasing harmony between humanity and nature. Its transformation promotes sustainable urban growth, supported by an ecological environment that underpins high-quality city life.
By November 2020, the “newborn” Liangma River attracted over 100,000 daily visitors, both domestic and international, reinvigorating Beijing’s cultural and economic vitality. It stands as a testament to the philosophy of “lucid waters and lush mountains” and a cherished green retreat at the doorstep of its citizens.
