For this 40-year-old house, we have implemented structural reinforcement, waterproofing, and pipeline upgrades to address common issues for an old home. These improvements resolved exterior wall leaks, protected exposed rebars, and enhanced the overall durability of the building. Reconfiguring the existing layout is a great opportunity for creating a bespoke home that suits modern living needs, where we can enhance aesthetics and functionality.

Layout Reconfiguration

The core of the interior design focuses on "bringing in light" while optimizing the original narrow and elongated layout. First, the kitchen partition wall was moved backward to enhance the living room's functionality, creating a more open and versatile space. Transparent glass partition allows natural light to flow freely between the living room, dining area, and kitchen, enhancing the sense of spaciousness.

Style and Color Palette

The design blends Japanese minimalism with cozy Scandinavian aesthetics, using abundant wood elements to create an elegant and serene charm. Complemented by a subdued nude hue, the space exudes tranquility, providing a serene atmosphere for relaxation. In the master bedroom, a soft muted pink palette sets the tone, crafting a dreamy and soothing sleep environment.

Functionality

The entryway features a stunning array of floor tiles adorned with intricate floral patterns to define a mud room, while an adjustable pegboard on the wall serves both as a display for accessories and a hanging space, adding a sense of ritual upon entering the home. Beside the sofa, a multifunctional cabinet offers storage space and also serves as a shrine where reverence is given to the ancestors. The dimensions of the cabinet are designed according to Luban's Ruler, ensuring auspicious energy and harmony in the space. A pull-out tray in the middle section provides a dedicated space for ritual offerings, while the lower section offers ample storage for worship-related items. The cabinet features curved trims, softening its visual presence and creating a more harmonious look.
