My art and design work explores sustainability by critically examining societal structures and proposing small steps toward a sustainable future. I focus on the grid system, a long-standing framework for organizing space, to reflect on human competition for limited resources. Traditionally, we have occupied the planes of the grid—divided territories that fuel competition and unsustainable growth.

To rethink this approach, I shift focus to the lines of the grid. Unlike planes, which divide, lines create pathways that connect and expand possibilities. By prioritizing relationships over individual positions, we can move beyond territorial disputes toward shared, sustainable living.

This idea parallels the game of Go, where stones placed on grid lines hold no meaning in isolation. Only through connection and interaction do they gain significance. Similarly, sustainability lies not in isolated actions but in the networks and relationships we build.

Go System is a work that expresses this idea by transforming discarded waste materials into furniture that can be arranged in everyday spaces. In furniture design, we typically prioritize the surfaces formed by frames, determining how to use them. As a result, furniture primarily occupies space through its planes. However, shifting attention to the frame itself reveals a new spatial order. This project suggests a different view—seeing space as a network of lines rather than confined planes. This shift opens new possibilities for more efficient and dynamic spatial use,

For example, when considering a cube, if we focus on the faces, only one person can sit on the top. However, if we focus on the lines and the intersections where they meet, four people can sit at the top corners. By placing circular discs, like Go stones, onto the frame structure made of lines, the possibilities of how the space can be utilized by many people are expanded.

Even within the same grid, our path changes depending on whether we focus on planes or lines. For sustainability, we must move beyond competition on limited planes and embrace the lines that connect us. This shift fosters coexistence, shared possibilities, and a future built on relationships rather than division.
