A Cultural Sanctuary Rooted in Tang-Song Elegance

Mu Zhuo Tavern & Public House is a contemporary homage to the aesthetic spirit of the Tang and Song dynasties. Designed with cultural resonance at its core, the space reimagines the ancient elegance of Chinese taverns through a modern, sustainable lens.

The interior layout is both functional and immersive—comprising a central bar, casual seating area, one independent restroom, and two private dining rooms. The color palette draws from dark, earthy tones, creating a tranquil ambiance reminiscent of historical teahouses and inns.

Cultural elements are seamlessly integrated into the architecture. The bar’s canopy mimics the overhanging eaves of traditional Chinese roofs, while the ceiling features wooden dougong brackets, paying tribute to ancient structural craftsmanship. Other ceilings adopt a “starry sky” effect, adding visual depth and poetic atmosphere.

Material selection prioritizes environmental responsibility and tactile authenticity. PU stone is used on the exterior façade for durability and scratch resistance. The transitional entry wall incorporates century-old green bricks, anchoring the design in heritage. Interior walls feature true stone paint, and the dougong elements are crafted from solid wood. Over 80% of the decorative materials are recyclable, aligning the design with green construction principles and ecological awareness.

The project emphasizes the social role of design as a medium for cultural transmission. By fusing classical Chinese architecture with contemporary hospitality needs, Mu Zhuo serves not only as a physical space for gathering but as a living narrative of shared memory and identity. It upholds the responsibility of cultural preservation and sustainable practice—offering a model for environmentally-conscious design rooted in tradition.
