The Splendid Mountains and Rivers derives its name from the Chinese term “Jin Xiu” —a word that not only describes sumptuous silk fabrics but also evokes visions of grandeur, beauty, and national pride. This duality reflects the soul of the work: a meticulously crafted garment that intertwines artistic refinement with deep-rooted cultural symbolism.

Constructed from an exquisite fusion of pure silk wool and silk mesh, the piece embodies tactile softness and visual fluidity. The fabric serves as a canvas for a confluence of traditional Chinese embroidery arts—including couched gold embroidery, random-stitch Su embroidery, and plant-based dyeing. Silk mesh, dyed with natural pigments, is reimagined through layering and stitching to resemble undulating mountain ranges, mirroring the natural contours of China’s majestic landscapes.

This work is not merely decorative, but a narrative in thread—each technique chosen to represent a facet of China's natural and cultural geography. The gold-thread embroidery captures the shimmer of rivers and waterways, symbolizing the life force that flows through the nation. The layered mountains, created through the interplay of embroidery and reconstructed fabric, speak to the resilience and strength of the Chinese people, their unwavering ascent through generations.

Uniquely, the design integrates Western embroidery techniques with classical Eastern forms, creating a visual and cultural dialogue between worlds. This harmonious blend reflects a modern China that is both rooted and forward-looking, seamlessly weaving tradition with global creativity.

More than a garment, The Splendid Mountains and Rivers is a wearable landscape, a textile poem, and a celebration of Chinese craftsmanship. It pays tribute not only to the nation’s physical beauty but to its cultural wisdom, perseverance, and evolving identity.

Each stitch is an echo of heritage. Each pattern, a portrait of home. And in its folds, one can feel the pulse of a civilization that continues to rise—gracefully, resolutely, and with splendor.
