The School of Fashion & Textiles (SFT) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) champions creativity and innovation in fashion and textile education. Our proposal for the SFT Design Studio is centered on the theme "Warp and Weft, Light and Shadow, Teaching and Learning, People and Space," emphasizing the dynamic interplay of light, spatial organization, collaboration, and artistic expression. This design aspires to create an inspiring environment that enhances aesthetic appeal while stimulating creativity and collaboration.

The Inspiring Journey

The project features a lengthy, irregularly shaped floor plan, incorporating various attractions to transform the corridor into an engaging journey that encourages students to unleash their creative potential. At the studio's heart, a multi-functional space fosters collaboration among students, faculty, and industry professionals, supporting activities such as showcase events, seminars, fashion master classes, and mini fashion shows. Layered lighting is designed to suit different purposes.

The proposed design weaves together light and shadow, teaching and learning, and people and space, nurturing creativity, fostering collaboration, and building a strong community to prepare students for the future of fashion and textile design.

Warp and Weft, Light and Shadow

Warp and weft are the fundamental components of weaving that transform threads into fabric, aligning with the essence of SFT. When sunlight hits the Warp and Weft feature wall, shadows from the abstract weaving patterns will turn the corridor into an inspiring passage of light and shade.

Teaching and Learning, People and Space

The studio accommodates both individual and group work with modular, adaptable furniture that optimizes limited space. Instead of conventional desks, we propose a tailored modular desk system called the Fashion Design Student Working Hub. This system minimizes clutter and maximizes functionality within compact dimensions. It includes multiple storage units, a power supply, a magnetic tool organizer, and a retractable unit for additional workspace. The table surface features a built-in measuring tape, and the mobile stool integrates storage solutions, offering flexibility to meet the needs of fashion design students.
