Located in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill, this project envisions the transformation of an underutilized open space owned by Anchor Brewing Company as a multi-functional garden rooted in place-based brewing culture. The site is located between industrial and residential zones and is close to several local schools. It has long remained underutilized due to operational constraints. The project introduces a vibrant landscape vision that reactivates the courtyard as a social, educational, and cultural destination.
Inspired by Anchor’s traditional brewing techniques, the garden translates the stages of malting, boiling, cooling, fermentation, and maturation into spatial experiences. Warm-toned copper finishes reference Anchor’s signature copper kettles, and the brewery’s rare open-air fermentation method, which depends on San Francisco’s unique climate, is honored through a dedicated pavilion and adaptive planting. The cooling phase is reinterpreted as misting zones that create sensorial immersion.
Additional features include planting beds showcasing beer ingredients, a water wall inspired by glass bottles, and a copper-clad gateway that doubles as a performance backdrop. The central plaza serves as a flexible venue for seasonal festivals and public gatherings. Together, these elements bridge past and present, brand and community, reactivating the courtyard as a space of narrative and encounter.
