This project involves the renovation of an old residential building in Tainan City. The site originally consisted of two connected buildings, with the target property located on the fourth and fifth floors of the bridge connecting the two structures, forming an independent residential unit. Addressing challenges such as insufficient natural light, fragmented floor plans, and the need to preserve existing finishes, the design team adhered to the principle of “revitalizing the old.” They team divided the space according to functional requirements by floor level and incorporated natural materials to align with the homeowners' preference for solid wood. The result is a residence that harmoniously blends emotional continuity with renewed vitality, emerging as a timeless pearl in the heart of the city.
The fourth floor is thoughtfully divided into distinct front and rear sections, each serving its unique purpose. In the front area, a spacious open-plan design showcases a refined white color scheme complemented by cleverly concealed storage solutions, resulting in a clean and uncluttered aesthetic. Notably, a gracefully curved island extends into the dining area, elegantly defining the space while introducing a dynamic rhythm to the overall layout.
Conversely, the rear guest rooms have been preserved with their original cabinetry and wall niches, which have been skillfully refurbished to breathe new life into the old house, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. On the fifth floor, existing irregular partitions have been strategically removed, allowing for a cohesive integration of cleaning and washing functions. In the master bedroom, the storage area features striking glass sliding doors devoid of lower tracks, ingeniously balancing storage and display while ensuring a sense of visual openness.
This project is thoughtfully designed with a strong emphasis on energy conservation and sustainability, prioritizing the preservation of historically significant components and antique furniture. To enhance the aesthetic and promote a healthy living environment, we have chosen eco-friendly, colorless paint for the woodwork, ensuring both safety and beauty. Moreover, throughout the space, high-color-rendering LED lighting fixtures are meticulously integrated, illuminating the area while highlighting architectural features.
