The 2025 Hualien Liyu Lake Midsummer Light Festival transforms Taiwan’s largest alpine lake into a stage of cultural storytelling where nature, art, and community meet. Liyu Lake, embraced by mountains and known for its tranquil beauty, becomes the canvas for a night-long journey illuminated by seven themed installations. Each work reinterprets midsummer traditions with light as both medium and message, inviting visitors into a poetic dialogue between the environment and human imagination.

At the entrance, Mountain and Water Welcome Gate greets visitors with blue-lit mountain silhouettes and carp imagery, symbolizing harmony between the region’s landscape and culture. Fluttering Butterflies animates stone pillars with luminous wings, suggesting ecological vitality while guiding guests deeper into the lakeside trail. Fireflies of Summer scatters twinkling lamps across the grass, mirroring the magical presence of real fireflies and evoking a starry meadow. Pink Glow at Liyu Lake bathes the viewing deck in soft hues of pink, offering a dreamlike atmosphere where romance and serenity intertwine.

Further along, Blooming Light creates a golden tunnel of illumination, where blossoms of radiance symbolize vitality, renewal, and prosperity for Hualien. Drifting Stroll transforms a pavilion into an underwater fantasy through cool blue tones and bubble-like effects, encouraging playful immersion and moments of tranquility. The journey culminates in Mom, a sculptural installation inspired by mountain silhouettes, interwoven colored cords, and floral lights. It embodies Mother Earth’s embrace, conveying the continuity of life and the protective spirit of the land.

More than a visual spectacle, the festival emphasizes inclusivity and shared experience. It provides safe nightscapes for strolling, spaces for gathering, and atmospheres that inspire photography, memory, and storytelling. By integrating sustainable LED technologies with local cultural motifs, it strengthens Hualien’s identity while enriching tourism. Ultimately, the festival becomes a celebration of connection—between people and place, past and present, tradition and innovation—inviting all to rediscover their bond with nature beneath the midsummer sky.
