The Avanade Intelligent Garden, created for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show the world’s most prestigious garden event reimagines how technology can deepen our connection with nature. At its core are three digital screens, a responsive web app, and ‘TreeTalk’– an AI-powered chat function that allows trees to ‘speak’. Each element was designed to engage, educate, and inspire in a way that is both accessible and sustainable.

The three screens, act as immersive storytelling canvases, visualising real-time data from tree sensors that monitor soil, air, and weather conditions. With inclusive visual language and high-contrast graphics, the screens ensure legibility for all visitors, regardless of ability.

The web app extends the garden’s experience beyond its physical boundaries. Built using the Avanade design system, it reuses modular UI components across both screen and app formats reducing design effort and environmental impact. Accessibility was a priority, with features including screen reader compatibility, simplified navigation, and mobile responsiveness.

‘TreeTalk’ gives trees a “voice”, allowing visitors to engage in conversation and learn how to care for them. Behind the scenes, complex environmental data is processed by a lightweight, energy-efficient AI model. This data is translated into digestible, conversational insights, making scientific information accessible to all ages and backgrounds.

Together, these elements form a cohesive digital ecosystem that prioritises user needs while minimising environmental impact. From the reuse of design libraries to low-carbon hosting infrastructure, every decision was made with sustainability and inclusivity in mind.

The Intelligent Garden is more than a showpiece, it’s a living example of how responsible technology and inclusive design can create spaces that are not only beautiful, but meaningful. Soon to be permanently housed in Mayfield Park, Manchester, it will continue to grow as a beacon of innovation, accessibility, and environmental care.

Despite the challenge of deploying technology in a location without internet, the result reflects a true team effort creative designers, horticulturalists, technologists, and UX experts working side by side.
