GUARDIAN NOOK: A Sustainable Stray Cat Shelter

This project addresses the survival challenges faced by urban stray cats—lack of secure habitat, water, and protection—through a sustainably designed shelter that operates on three levels of self-sufficiency: habitat, energy, and water.

Constructed from eco-friendly composite materials, the shelter features a modular, curved design that accommodates cats’ natural behaviors while promoting ventilation and shade. Its energy independence comes from an integrated ring-shaped wind turbine, powering internal LED lighting. A rainwater harvesting and filtration system collects, purifies, and distributes water via a rooftop storage unit and low-level outlet, creating a closed-loop water cycle. The roof is also planted with local species like moss and ferns, enhancing microclimate regulation and air purification.

The shelter is supported by a dedicated mobile app that lowers the threshold for public participation. Users can locate nearby shelters, remotely control device functions, and access educational content on stray cat care. An integrated adoption board transforms the shelter from basic refuge into a hub for rescue, awareness, and rehoming.

By combining hardware capable of triple self-sufficiency with software-enabled public engagement, this project fosters a low-threshold, sustainable model of coexistence between humans, animals, and the urban environment.
