About The Entry

拾光 Shí Guāng Homestay is a branding project that redefines hospitality as an experience of mindfulness and memory. Developed as a contemporary response to the growing commercialization of Malaysia’s boutique homestay landscape, the project seeks to reintroduce cultural depth and structured brand identity into township-based accommodations. Located in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia, the project bridges the essence of a traditional tea-house with a contemporary homestay model, positioning the space as both a cultural retreat and a living sanctuary within Malaysia’s rich multicultural environment.

The brand name 拾光 (Shí Guāng), meaning “gathering moments” or “picking up light,” forms the conceptual foundation of the identity system. Rooted in Malaysia’s layered cultural heritage and slower-paced township atmosphere, the concept moves beyond poetic symbolism and is translated into a structured visual language that reflects warmth, flow, and balance while ensuring clarity and scalability.

The identity framework draws from three symbolic pillars — Tea (茶), Waterfall (水), and Temple (庙). Together, these elements represent ritual and human connection, fluidity and continuity, as well as grounding and spatial order. Inspired by Malaysia’s tea traditions, natural landscapes, and architectural heritage, the branding system transforms these references into a cohesive visual structure that informs color, typography, and layout decisions.

A restrained earthy color palette reflects the warmth of tea culture, while a flowing typographic rhythm mirrors the movement of water. Structured grid compositions subtly echo temple architecture, creating a deliberate balance between fluidity and discipline. Minimal graphic forms reinforce stillness and clarity, allowing the brand to communicate serenity without visual excess.

The result is a scalable corporate identity system that balances emotional storytelling with visual precision. From signage and printed materials to digital touchpoints, the branding maintains consistency while remaining adaptable across various hospitality applications.

拾光 Shí Guāng Homestay is not merely a place to stay, but a strategically designed cultural retreat — a brand experience shaped by Malaysia’s environmental and architectural influences, inviting guests to slow down, reflect, and reconnect while transforming everyday moments into lasting memories through design.
