The Ephemeral Petunia Garden is a large-scale public art installation unveiled during Dubai Design Week 2025 at Dubai Design District. Inspired by the seasonal petunias that briefly bloom across the city each winter before disappearing under extreme summer heat, the project transforms a fleeting botanical phenomenon into architectural presence.
Standing at 6 meters in height with a 4-meter diameter base, the installation reinterprets the delicacy of a single petunia into a monumental spatial field. Powder-coated mesh petals are supported by a weather-resistant steel stem system and anchored within a modular aluminum base engineered for public safety and wind resistance. Integrated low-energy LED lighting enables a seamless day-to-night transformation: reflective and sculptural by day, luminous and immersive by night.
Positioned within a high-footfall pedestrian corridor, the installation interrupts urban velocity with softness, inviting pause and reflection. The mirrored base integrates surrounding architecture and visitors into the work, dissolving the boundary between object and environment.
Conceived as reusable public infrastructure rather than temporary spectacle, the structural system is fully modular, allowing disassembly, transport, and reinstallation. With a total power consumption of 500W and IP66-rated components, the installation balances atmospheric lightness with engineering precision and sustainability.
Engaging over 135,000 visitors during its exhibition period, The Ephemeral Petunia Garden became a civic landmark and gathering point, reinforcing the role of public art as a catalyst for collective memory within contemporary desert urbanism.
