Ice Huts is a climate-responsive community prototype designed for the remote and extreme environment of Lake Mývatn, Iceland. The project explores how architecture can support collective living in isolated regions by functioning as both social infrastructure and environmental mediator.
Organized as a series of interconnected volumes, the design negotiates between protected interior spaces and selective outward engagement with the landscape. This spatial strategy allows the architecture to respond to seasonal variation, providing shelter during harsh conditions while enabling openness during milder periods.
At the core of the proposal is a system of indoor urban farming, supporting local food production and reinforcing community resilience in resource-constrained environments. The building operates as a self-sustaining framework that integrates habitation, production, and social interaction.
A timber-based structural system, informed by daylight and environmental studies, minimizes material dependency while maximizing performance. Through this integration of climate, structure, and program, Ice Huts proposes a scalable model for rural architecture - one that strengthens both environmental adaptability and community cohesion.
