Historically, Songpan served as a pivotal frontier fortress and a bustling trading hub on the Tea Horse Road, where the Han, Qiang, and Tibetan cultures converged. Renowned as the “Highland Ancient City” and the “Gateway to Western Sichuan,” it holds a singular place in China’s cultural geography. The Songpan Ancient City Infrastructure Project is rooted in a design philosophy that treats “culture as the soul, history as the pulse, and local life as the breath.” Adhering strictly to the conservation principles of “Minimum Intervention” and “Restoration to Originality,” this project seeks to move Songpan beyond its traditional role as a mere transit stop, transforming it into a deeply immersive, high-value cultural destination on the plateau through systematic spatial restructuring and functional iteration.
The project’s master plan rigorously follows a spatial framework of “One City, One Belt, Two Axes, and Three Districts.” This layout is designed to harmonize the city’s historical grain with modern requirements, focusing on cultural exhibition ecosystems, service capacity upgrades, and the night-time economy.
The architecture and landscape design achieve a symbiosis between indigenous heritage and contemporary utility. The design uses traditional materials—such as local bluestone, raw timber, and copper accents—to preserve the city’s historical memory and weathered patina. These are seamlessly integrated with modern glass, weathering steel, and flame-retardant composites to enhance structural safety and interactive experiences, balancing historical legacy with modern functionality.
The project focuses on revitalizing high-impact zones, including the romantic riverside leisure zone, the cultural corridor along the city wall, the North Gate Square, and the Tea Horse Ancient Trail experience district. By integrating intangible cultural heritage performances, light shows, AR-enhanced interactions, and traditional lantern installations, this project constructs a multi-sensory, immersive environment, transforming a silent historical site into a vibrant, perceptible vessel of living culture.
Driven by a tripartite model of “Cultural Conservation, Functional Activation, and Technological Empowerment,” this project represents a leap in tourism quality. It establishes a robust foundation for Songpan to become a national historical and cultural city, achieving a win-win synergy between heritage stewardship and high-quality industrial development.
