Zilang Lake Pavilion | Light Grown from Structure

Located at the center of Zilang Lake in Nantong, the pavilion is conceived as a quiet public retreat embedded within a sensitive ecological landscape. Inspired by the cultural symbol of the century-old wisteria, the architecture adopts a flowing timber roof layered with ceramic louvers, forming a soft, undulating profile that responds to the surrounding water and vegetation.



The lighting design is guided by a fundamental principle: light should not be added, but grown from the structure itself. Linear luminaires are seamlessly integrated within timber joints, allowing light to emerge subtly along the natural grain. This approach dissolves the boundary between architecture and illumination, giving the roof a floating presence at night. Low-angle grazing light softly washes across the ceramic louvers, revealing their granular texture while maintaining a restrained visual expression.



Rather than creating a visually dominant nightscape, the project adopts a “visual reduction” strategy. All lighting is precisely shielded and calibrated to avoid glare and uplight, minimizing impact on birds and aquatic life. The building operates with its own temporal rhythm: gradually brightening at dusk, then receding into minimal illumination at night, aligning with the natural circadian cycle of the lake environment.



The spatial experience unfolds through a sequence of light conditions. Subtle illumination at the forest edge marks the transition from the city into a more introspective atmosphere. The central space, shaped by layered shadows and filtered light, evokes memory and intimacy. At the lakeside terrace, artificial lighting is almost entirely withdrawn, leaving reflections, darkness, and starlight to define the experience.



By removing visual excess and prioritizing ecological sensitivity, the pavilion transforms into a quiet luminous presence—one that supports human perception without dominating it, and ultimately becomes a place where architecture, light, and nature coexist in balance.
