Located within Shanghai’s historic Huangpu district, the project reimagines the spirit of the city’s iconic lane houses through a contemporary lens. Titled “Continuing a Century, Anchored in Stillness,” the residence stands within one of Shanghai’s most culturally significant neighborhoods — the birthplace of the city’s commercial legacy and a living archive of Haipai culture. More than a home, it is conceived as a timeless sanctuary where heritage, art, and modern living coexist.

Drawing inspiration from traditional Shanghai shikumen residences and classical courtyard houses, CCD reshapes the historic lane-house typology into a contemporary “Home for Collectors.” Through a sequence of ceremonial thresholds — from city street to courtyard to private residence — the architecture recreates the ritual and intimacy of historic Shanghai living. Eastern spatial philosophy is delicately interwoven with Western garden aesthetics, forming a refined dialogue between past and present.

At the heart of the residence, an interior light courtyard introduces natural light, seasonal atmosphere, and a sense of tranquility into the entire home. Open-plan living areas reinterpret the social intimacy of old Shanghai neighborhoods, while Art Deco details, brass accents, geometric patterns, and lattice screens subtly reference the city’s cosmopolitan heritage. Carefully curated antiques, sculptures, and collectible furniture transform everyday spaces into a livable gallery, reflecting the owner’s personal narrative and cultural vision.

The lower-level private salon shifts the atmosphere into a more intimate and immersive experience, balancing social entertainment, art appreciation, and quiet reflection. Meanwhile, the primary suite embraces tactile materials, soft textures, and spa-inspired detailing to create a deeply restorative retreat.

Rather than preserving history as nostalgia, the project seeks to continue it — transforming Shanghai’s enduring cultural memory into a contemporary lifestyle shaped by elegance, serenity, and timeless artistic spirit.
