About The Entry

This project proposes a regenerative cattle ranching system within the Mississippi Watershed, one of the most agriculturally productive yet ecologically stressed regions in the United States. It rethinks conventional ranching practices by integrating ecological design strategies that enhance carbon sequestration, improve soil health, and restore watershed-scale biodiversity while maintaining agricultural productivity.

At the core of the design is a “pasture matrix” system—a cattle maze reconfiguration of grazing land into a structured network of controlled movement pathways and vegetated corridors. This spatial system operates as a cattle-guided maze that strategically distributes grazing pressure across the landscape. By directing herd movement, the system prevents overgrazing, promotes vegetation regeneration, and expands the effective ecological surface area of the ranch. The resulting landscape functions as a dynamic mosaic of pasture, carbon-absorbing vegetation zones, and restored soil systems.

In parallel, the project introduces an integrated agricultural waste filtration network. This system captures runoff from grazing and production areas through a series of constructed wetlands, biofiltration channels, and sedimentation landscapes. These processes reduce nutrient pollution, improve downstream water quality, and strengthen the ecological resilience of surrounding hydrological systems within the watershed.

Together, these interventions transform the ranch into a closed-loop ecological infrastructure where livestock movement, soil regeneration, carbon storage, and water purification are interconnected. Rather than treating cattle ranching as extractive land use, the design reframes it as an active ecological service that contributes to watershed restoration.

Pasture Matrix demonstrates how agricultural landscapes can operate as multifunctional systems that balance productivity with environmental repair. It offers a scalable model for regenerative ranching that responds to climate change, supports biodiversity recovery, and redefines the role of working landscapes in the future of ecological design.
