Random Bar is not a static venue, but a “social generator” that continuously produces spatial experiences. At its core lies a precision mechanical system integrated within the architecture—comprising module transport tracks, vertical transporters, a movable folded-plate glass curtain wall, and eight types of programmable functional modules.
By day, all modules unfold along the tracks on both sides of the ground floor, forming an open, linear commercial arcade that hosts exhibitions, markets, public lounging, and small-scale performances. At this stage, the building merges seamlessly with the urban street, presenting a transparent, low-threshold public interface.
From 18:00 onward, the system initiates its morphological transformation. Through vertical ascents and horizontal migrations, the modules reorganize within minutes into a two-tiered nocturnal labyrinth: the ground floor features a central bar and dance floor, while suspended above are booth seating, music platforms, and private capsules. The glass facade partially closes as lighting and acoustic systems switch in sync.
The theoretical core of the design lies in using “absolutely deterministic mechanical movement to generate unpredictable social events.” All module motions are dispatched by a central control system, yet multiple switchable rule sets are embedded within it—Concert Mode, Exhibition Mode, Lounge Mode, etc. The initial state of each day's reset, the priority algorithm in conflict resolution, and real-time human actions (such as guests delaying departure) all enter the system as variables, making every transformation slightly different. Thus, architecture ceases to be a fixed container and becomes an unrepeating “spatial performance.”
Integrating cybernetics, cellular automata logic, and physical construction, Random Bar investigates how randomness and contingency can be cultivated within a precise technical framework. It is a manifesto of architecture as a dynamic medium—designed not for a single function, but for change itself.
