Seasons Pavilion

Nestled within a forest garden in San Diego, Seasons Pavilion explores the relationship between architecture, nature, and the passage of time. The project translates Japanese ideas of tranquility, simplicity, and connection to nature into a contemporary architectural language. Rather than asserting itself as an object within the landscape, the architecture quietly recedes into its surroundings, allowing nature to become the primary experience.

The design is guided by the Japanese philosophy of harmony between the built and natural worlds. A floating roof plane extends beyond the enclosed living spaces, creating deep overhangs and sheltered terraces that recall the traditional Engawa—the intermediary zone between interior and exterior. These transitional spaces encourage occupants to slow down, observe shifting weather, changing light, and seasonal transformations throughout the year.

Expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing further dissolves the boundary between inside and outside, transforming the surrounding forest and garden into an ever-changing backdrop. Throughout the day, shifting light filters through the trees and across the pavilion’s surfaces; at night, the building glows softly within the landscape like a lantern, extending warmth into the garden.

Materiality reinforces a sense of quiet permanence. Warm vertical wood cladding introduces natural texture and craftsmanship, while the roof is clad in granite-textured anodized aluminum panels by Pure + FreeForm. Their subtle metallic grain recalls the refined material sensibility found in Kengo Kuma’s Portland Japanese Garden Cultural Village. Recessed roof edges and carefully detailed cantilevers reduce visual weight, allowing the roof to hover lightly above the landscape.

The surrounding garden draws inspiration from the traditions of Karesansui and Japanese strolling gardens. Raked gravel, sculptural stone compositions, water features, and layered planting establish a sequence of contemplative outdoor rooms. The pavilion’s precise geometry contrasts with the organic forms of the landscape, creating a dynamic balance between order and nature, permanence and change.

More than a building, Seasons Pavilion is an exploration of time made visible through architecture. Through proportion, light, materiality, and landscape, the project creates a contemporary sanctuary where people, nature, and the changing seasons coexist in harmonious balance.
