About The Entry

The work is inspired by the philosophical paradox of "The Ship of Theseus"—Whether things maintain their identity amid constant changes and continuous renewal. The author integrates this philosophical reflection with the microscopic processes of the biological cell cycle. By contrasting the macro and the micro, the work illuminates the central idea that "people rarely perceive changes since they are continuous."

This work transforms the abstract philosophical paradox into a daily tangible process of human cell metabolism. Breaking free from the form of traditional graphic posters, the work takes the form of a suspended mixed-media installation. It uses hand-drawn illustrations and Adobe Illustrator to visualize the form changes of blood platelets, red blood cells, and macrophages during the four phases of the life cycle. Next, it uses lightweight air-dry clay to shape three-dimensional cells and hangs them on textile banners, transforming the invisible yet continuous renewal into a perceptible spatial narrative. As a result, viewers can learn about cell renewal and the flow of life at a human body scale when they walk around and look up at the work.

Visually, the work adopts clean white or light grey as the overall background and blue for the main text. To highlight macroscopic cells, vibrant red and pink represent red blood cells and platelets, while purple and blue depict macrophages, creating visual focal points.

The whole installation conveys philosophical thought and reflects deep reflection on "self-identity" and "eternity and change" from the perspective of life science knowledge. Visitors can learn about the cell cycle (eg., 10 days or 120 days) and feel the flow and continuity of life, prompting reflection on their own ongoing cellular renewal.
