“Netscape” is an innovative and sustainable proposal for a public space in New Bedford, MA, a city known for its rich history and cultural diversity. Inspired by the fishing and textile industries as well as the growing wind energy sector, our project aims to revitalize the back yard in a social housing neighborhood by weaving together these unique elements, creating a dynamic, functional, and adaptable public space.
At the core of our design lies the the “Netscape” track system, a flexible framework that utilizes recycled fiber and fabric materials to create nets. This innovative structure pays homage to the city’s past while accommodating urban farming, modular pavilions, and adjustable furniture on a track system. Netscape allows users to personalize their desired level of privacy or publicity and encourages diverse activities for day and night-time use.
Sustainability is a key focus in our design, incorporating considerations for wind, sunshine, and rain. “Netscape” is a tribute to New Bedford’s vibrant history and culture, transforming an underutilized space into a thriving, sustainable, and adaptable public area. By fostering community interaction, promoting environmental consciousness, and celebrating the city’s unique identity, our design aims to create a place that reflects the spirit of New Bedford.
