About The Entry

It used to be just dirt. The South Quay, located in East Providence, Rhode Island, was created from landfill in 1979 but was abandoned after World War II. With the growth of the city, the senior population is rising, and many senior healthcare centers have been built around the waterfront, but they have lost their connection to open green spaces. The new design aims to transform this neglected area into an immersive nature therapy park by reshaping the terrain to create various ecosystem zones that activate the land and invite the adjacent community to engage in daily life.

Key design features include:

A. a water recycling system that connects to tidal and rainwater.

B. multi-access experience trails and various meditation spaces to improve mental health for people of all ages.

C. a new shoreline habitat for great blue herons to support natural wildlife.

This initiative seeks to extend the dynamic terrain and promote South Quay as a continued green ring for East Providence recreational routes. Join us in this exciting transformation!
