The proposed community library, located along the Chicago River with views of Goose Island, is a transformative project focused on urban renewal in a post-industrial context. Though not on Goose Island itself, the library honors its industrial legacy and serves as a catalyst for revitalizing the surrounding area. It repurposes underused land into a vibrant hub for learning, engagement, and environmental stewardship, blending the past with the future.

The design draws inspiration from the island’s industrial character, featuring exposed structural elements and a material palette of aluminum, wood, and glass. This creates a contrast between the rugged textures of the past and the sleek transparency of modern design.

Sustainability is a key focus, with features like a green roof and courtyard that combat the urban heat island effect, and vertical gardens that enhance air quality. The use of recycled steel, FSC-certified wood, and energy-efficient systems, such as solar panels and geothermal heating, emphasizes the project’s environmental responsibility.

The interior is flexible and inclusive, offering open-plan reading areas, private study pods, a children’s section, and a multipurpose hall for events. The space is designed to be accessible to all, with programming that celebrates local industrial history through author talks, art installations, and exhibits. Additionally, urban farming workshops and environmental education initiatives promote sustainability.

The design extends into the public realm, with a landscaped plaza, pedestrian pathways, and bike racks to foster community engagement. The library becomes a central gathering place for residents and visitors, encouraging connectivity.

This community library is a model for urban renewal, blending industrial aesthetics with sustainability, inclusivity, and community focus. It serves as a living, dynamic space that bridges the area’s industrial past with a sustainable urban future.
