Gathering Pavilion

Located in Tamsui District, New Taipei City, this residence is designed as a retirement home. The inspiration for the design stems from the homeowner’s childhood memories of growing up amidst bamboo groves in the mountains. The design team introduced the imagery of “bamboo forest” and “pavilion framework” to shape an interior that is both spacious and layered—allowing nature to flow softly into daily life rather than remain outside the window.

The project is named “Gathering Pavilion”, a term that phonetically echoes “bamboo shelter” in Chinese while also evoking the verb “to gather.” The name symbolizes the gentle act of a family returning from all corners to reunite in a shared home.

Drawing from local natural elements, the design subtly translates outdoor impressions into indoor. At the entrance, a combination of metal and wooden slats represents the grounded strength and extending reach of bamboo roots. Above the dining area, a canopy-like grille structure softens the presence of an overhead beam. By the living room window, a built-in daybed with a sliding tabletop creates a versatile setting for ocean gazing, reading, or gathering.

Throughout the home, variations in ceiling height, elevated flooring, and sliding doors offer a balance between spatial fluidity and functional zoning—preserving openness while creating a sense of rhythm and order.
