Craft of Both, in partnership with MADE, presents the ‘Moon Series’; an interactive, sculptural seating language in a constant state of unfolding.
Inspired by the iconic, rhythmic geometry of the Chinese Paper Fan, the Moon Series is realized as two discrete, yet complementary pieces; the ‘Moon Chair’ (60°) and ‘Moon Bench’ (120°). A dialogue of frictions; elegant and playful, framework and volume, dramatic and understated.
The rhythmic, curvilinear profile of oak at the core of the Moon Series sets the stage for an array of oversized fabric fan modules which, upon their attachment to the frame, unfold; flexing, partitioning, and transforming the rigid silhouette of the seat and surrounding space into a soft, voluptuous cloud in motion, reactive to wind and light.
The Moon Series’ flexibility produces an elegant tool for creative yet practical inhabitation of space; setting the stage for constant and comprehensive redefinition of form, footprint and silhouette according to preference or need.
The Moon Chair & Moon Bench allow bespoke fan modules to be attached, removed, folded or unfolded with ease at any position along their spans. The interchangeability of these fan modules opens the door boundless customisation options; empowering the user with choice of colour, texture and transparency.
The Moon Series is a love letter to the Chinese Paper Fan; an tactile, expressive object with a rich heritage as a device able to inform privacy, movement, colour and air. By emulating these qualities, the Moon Series seeks to elevate an otherwise ‘static’ piece of furniture within its environment, such that it becomes an active, empowering device in dialogue with its surroundings.
Via the combination of multiple Moon Chairs or Moon Benches, an extended sculptural landscape unfolds; a snaking, continuous timber form, where a ‘choreography’ of fans can control orientation, privacy, comfort and aesthetic.
The Moon Series invites creative exploration. Like a fan dance, the form of the Moon Series establishes a rhythm and pace, but the fluidity and variety of the fans is realised by the users’ own choreography.
