Once a vibrant hillside village of Anatolian Greeks, Kayaköy (Fethiye, Turkey) now rests in silence— Locals call it the “Ghost Village,” where stone walls and overgrown paths hold stories of migration, memory, and time. Kayaköy lost its Greek settlers in massacres and forced relocation, suffered through earthquake and looting. Yet, some 500 houses continue to survive and live as an “open-air museum” today.
I repropose the concept of “open-air museum”. There is no set route or must-see spots. Instead, three different types of interventions create destinations spaced throughout the site. Visitors are invited to disperse into the field, to linger, to feel, and to soak in the warm sunlight.
Talking about sunlight, Kayaköy has a unique layout - the houses gracefully descend from the hillside, avoiding blocking sunlight from neighbouring structures. This meticulous approach inspires me to use sunlight - an element that you can get wherever you go - as a primary resource of the interventions.
Then, I brought in glass as a medium. Subtly and reverently, it filters, reflects, or refracts light to create different experiences. As the sun arcs across the sky and seasons shift, the experience transforms, and the ruins come alive. A choreography of light and time is unfolding in silence.
At its heart, the project captures time in two forms. The ruins, woven with olive trees, speak to deep, historical time—centuries embedded in stone. The stained light, ephemeral and shifting, brings time to a human scale—a minute, a shadow, a flicker.
Where time lingers, among the ruins, in the field, beneath the sun.
