Situated in Ren’ai Township, Nantou County, the Wanta Power Plant Office Building lies deep within Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range, surrounded by dense forests and misty valleys at an elevation of over 900 meters. As the new administrative hub of Taiwan power company’s Wanta facility, the project is embedded in a highly sensitive mountain environment, where lighting design had to balance operational functionality with ecological responsibility.

The central concept, “light without disturbance,” guided the design approach. Rather than imposing artificial brightness, lighting was conceived as a subtle mediator between architecture and nature. Warm, restrained tones at 3000K were carefully integrated into the architectural and landscape composition, ensuring a quiet, respectful nighttime presence that reflects the spirit of resilience and humility embodied by the power plant.

To address challenges of fog, high humidity, and light-sensitive ecology, all outdoor luminaires were designed with anti-glare shielding and low color temperature. Placement was coordinated with architecture and landscape planning to reduce glare from reflective materials such as wood and water, while still securing safe circulation and orientation. Walkway and platform lights were positioned below eye level, creating a lantern-like glow that guides movement gently across the site.

Sustainability was a key priority: all fixtures utilize energy-efficient LEDs with zoning controls and time-based dimming, ensuring illumination only where and when it is needed. This “just enough light” principle minimizes energy waste and supports the long-term vision of low-carbon development in sensitive mountain regions.

Rather than relying on dramatic lighting effects, the design leverages the natural textures of timber facades, water surfaces, and vegetation to softly reflect and diffuse light. The resulting atmosphere enriches the nocturnal identity of the campus, instilling both safety and comfort. Ultimately, the lighting design transforms a functional workplace into a welcoming mountain retreat, where light becomes not only a tool for visibility but also a medium of connection between people, architecture, and nature.
