Hybrid Wetlands reimagines California’s Central Valley—one of the nation’s most productive yet ecologically depleted regions—by integrating wetland habitats into its existing irrigation infrastructure. Once abundant with diverse ecosystems, the Valley has suffered from centuries of extraction, leaving behind water scarcity, soil degradation, and habitat loss. Our proposal demonstrates how marginal agricultural lands can be redesigned to support both human and nonhuman life through low-tech, farmer-implemented interventions using existing tools and clay-based soil.
By transforming select croplands into multi-functional wetlands, the system provides phytoremediation, soil enrichment, pest control, flood mitigation, and recreational opportunities, offering both ecological and economic benefits. Implemented collectively across the Valley, these distributed interventions could generate 14,000–17,000 acres of permanent habitat, up to 786,000 acres of seasonal wetlands, and over 300 miles of accessible wetland corridors.
As climate change reshapes the region with droughts, floods, and shifting land use, Hybrid Wetlands envisions a self-adjusting network that may evolve from wetlands to grasslands while continuing to sustain ecological diversity and community resilience. Ultimately, the project positions working landscapes as active agents in restoring California’s most altered ecosystems.
