Nestled among the verdant peaks of Moganshan—China’s premier mountain retreat—a new model of sustainable outdoor hospitality has emerged. This project transforms two abandoned structures into supporting facilities for a unique hillside camp hotel, creating a new benchmark for nature-immersed getaways.

Guided by a deep respect for nature, the design follows a minimal-intervention approach. Inspiration comes directly from the land itself: the soft lines of the mountains, endless bamboo forests, terraced tea fields, and sunlight filtering through metasequoia trees. These elements shape the distinctive atmospheres and layouts of five thematic zones, each offering a unique way to connect with the surroundings while preserving the site’s original features.

Designing across such varied terrain required constant on-site presence. The team repeatedly surveyed the slopes to position each camping spot carefully, ensuring privacy, preserving trees, and framing views of the wilderness. The result is a design that feels naturally woven into the mountainside.

Material selection prioritizes durability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental responsibility. Local materials—such as reclaimed wood and traditional bamboo fencing handcrafted by villagers—not only reduce transportation costs but also honor the region’s heritage. Additionally, eco-friendly composting toilets are installed throughout the site. These require no water, sewage, or electricity. Simple to install, they use replaceable filtration media to separate solid and liquid waste, ultimately converting human waste into nutrient-rich compost that nourishes on-site vegetation, closing the loop by returning it to the earth.

This innovative project not only provides guests with an immersive experience in nature but also offers a compelling example of responsible development within the outdoor hospitality industry.
