About The Entry

Since its founding in 1925, Fu Jen Catholic University (FJCU) has upheld holistic education and social responsibility as its core values. Approaching its centennial year, FJCU Taiwan commissioned YEN TING CHO Studio to visually interpret its spirit and values for a branded collection of commemorative products intended as gifts for patrons, alumni, etc. and for retail. The design team responded to the brief by using its own software, ‘mov.i.see’, which manipulates curated data (photos, videos) into original patterns that are subsequently altered by hand to refine structure and colour.

For the Studio, commemorative products are more than physical items - they are extensions of memory, emotion, and narrative. The design team sought to celebrate FJCU’s centenary by extracting symbolic elements from its significant contributions to medicine, society, history, and sports. Scores of images representative of each of the themes were digitally-woven using ‘mov.i.see’, shaping them into a visual language that balanced abstraction and representation. Two narrative threads were selected to express values of honor, compassion, and the merging of Eastern and Western cultural traditions through carefully orchestrated colour, texture, and rhythm:

‘Golden Spirit’ celebrates FJCU’s history, athletic spirit, and rich cultural heritage. The central character ‘Ren’, in gold, responds to the university’s core vision - resilience and honor - and represents the glory of its history.

‘Benevolence’ celebrates FJCU’s contributions to medicine and society. Expressed through Marian blue and rhythmic square motifs, it conveys care, healing, and the power of love, each square representing caring hearts woven together into a warm and compassionate visual tapestry.

The patterns were digitally-printed on scarves, ties, t-shirts, and caps to create a commemorative ‘Melodious Collection’. The patterns transform everyday objects into carriers of values and history that encourage consumers to share the warmth, mission, and cultural depth embedded in FJCU’s hundred-year spirit.

Beyond the aesthetic value of designs, the ‘Melodious Collection’ aims to foster emotional connections between the university and its community. Thoughtfully designed items and coherent packaging which combines minimalist aesthetics with rich symbolism - including the university crest - enrich the gifting, unboxing and consumer experience.
