Dunhuang, an oasis that carries a millennia of history and cultural fusion, is home to mural art that is a treasure of civilization. Among these murals, the Flying Apsara, a female deity, embodies a spirit of vitality and freedom. She symbolizes not only Daoist and Buddhist art but also a yearning for beauty and liberty.

This conceptual album uses the imagery of Dunhuang’s Flying Apsaras to explore the changing status of women in China from ancient times to the present. Through the interpretations of contemporary singers, it combines the essence of Dunhuang with female images from various historical contexts, creating an album that presents, through music, the struggles, efforts, and awakenings of women across different eras.

The album is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on showcasing the oppression and constraints faced by women throughout history, culminating in their rise during the Tang Dynasty, emphasizing how women defended their rights. The second part depicts women‘s resilience, strength, and pursuit of freedom in the face of injustice following the Tang Dynasty.

The aim is to awaken public awareness of women’s status through music and provoke reflection on history. It is hoped that listeners will appreciate the trials and triumphs experienced by women in different eras, fostering a greater appreciation for the present and inspiring contributions toward building a more equal and free society. Throughout history, the status of women has fluctuated. While today‘s society may seem progressive, many invisible shackles still exist, and upon closer examination, it appears that freedom may have been more limited in ancient times.
