Milton Studio

Set within the constrained footprint of a London terraced garden, Milton Studio reimagines a traditional garden outbuilding. The project maximises the limited footprint by incorporating a basement recording studio and mezzanine level within the modest garden studio. Home to over 30,000 records, the space provides an environment for listening, recording, conversation and broadcasting.

The studio is organised around a dramatic double height volume, illuminated by a large garden facing window that draws light deep into the interior while creating a strong visual connection to the surrounding garden. Above, a twisted pitched roof responds sensitively to neighbouring properties while increasing internal volume and allowing generous ceiling heights.

Materially, the project embraces a warm and tactile palette of timber throughout. The interiors were a collaboration with The Wilson Brothers, Ben and Oscar. Decorative pine plywood wraps the walls, ceilings and bespoke joinery, creating a cohesive and immersive interior. Every element has been considered for the client's needs, custom shelving and drawers throughout accommodate an extensive vinyl collection, while routed display groves allow record sleeves to be displayed, contributing to the character of the space.

Acoustic performance is embedded throughout the design. Developed in collaboration with specialist consultants, bespoke acoustic panels are integrated within the joinery, ensuring the technical requirements for the studio are resolved without compromising the design.

The harmonious blend of design and functionality ensures that the garden studio is not only a place for creativity but also a beautiful extension of the home.
