4. What does “design” mean to you?
To me, design embodies the essence of problem-solving through creativity. It involves identifying challenges, understanding user needs, and crafting innovative solutions. Whether it's architectural structures, products, interfaces, or identities, design prioritises functionality, usability, sustainability, and impact beyond aesthetics. It serves as the bridge between imagination and realisation, where creativity meets practicality.
5. How did you come up with the idea for your award-winning design?
The idea for the award-winning design emerged from a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and unique characteristics of Reynisfjara Beach and its surrounding volcanic landscape. Community resilience is another critical factor: Observing the resilience and adaptability of the local community in such a challenging landscape influenced the design's sturdy exterior and warm, inviting interior, reflecting both endurance and comfort.
6. What was your main source of inspiration for this design?
The main source of inspiration for this design was the stark beauty and rugged terrain of the volcanic landscape surrounding Reynisfjara Beach. The design seeks to reflect the resilience and essence of the local community, drawing from the natural environment to create a harmonious blend of sturdy exterior and warm interior spaces.
Additionally, the mysterious and enchanting qualities of the obsidian sands at Reynisfjara Beach influenced the creation of a bespoke, immersive experience for travelers, ensuring a connection with nature and the local culture while adhering to sustainable design principles.
7. Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
Yes, our architecture traditionally emphasises harmony with nature. This principle influenced the design's seamless blending with the volcanic landscape, ensuring that the structures coexist peacefully with their surroundings.

The winning project entered into the 2024 London Design Awards is a collection of minimalist living spaces nestled adjacent to Reynisfjara Beach. Inspired by the stark beauty of the surrounding black volcanic landscape, each space serves as a sanctuary for travelers seeking refuge amidst the rugged terrain. The design features a sturdy exterior shell juxtaposed with an inviting, warm interior core, reflecting the resilient essence of the local community.
Drawing inspiration from Reynisfjara Beach's obsidian sands and aura of mystery, the project seamlessly merges with its natural surroundings to offer a bespoke, immersive experience for hikers, weaving tales of endurance and comfort in a captivating environment. I entered this project into the 2024 London Design Awards because it beautifully encapsulates my design ethos.
