The Mukden Palace Experience, a Mixed Reality Interface, redefines visitor engagement at cultural heritage sites by integrating cutting-edge technology with traditional exhibits. This project, deeply informed by extensive research and observations at the Shenyang Palace Museum, strives to harmonize the authenticity of cultural landmarks with interactive digital experiences. By employing devices like the Apple Vision Pro, users can interact with exhibits through intuitive eye-tracking and gesture controls, utilizing the Shenyang Palace Museum’s meticulously prepared multimedia content. This enriched content, featuring detailed explanations of both 3D objects like porcelain, weaponry, jade, and apparel, and 2D works such as calligraphy and paintings, allows users to customize their exploration and deeply engage with the aspects of the collection that interest them most. Developed from March 2023 to 2024, this interface uses Figma and Adobe Photoshop for design, and macOS Xcode for testing, adhering to ergonomic guidelines to optimize user interactions. Our research, incorporating field observations and internet ethnography, directly informs design choices, addressing user needs for engaging and informative digital experiences at museums, setting a pioneering standard for heritage sites globally.
