Nanjing Jiangbei Wondercity

Nanjing Jiangbei Wondercity urban complex is located northwest of Nanjing, a national historical and cultural city and important birthplace of Chinese civilization. It includes a 6-floor shopping center, a 200m-tall office and hotel tower, and a 100m-tall apartment tower. The initial concept is to create a living room for the community, to let people gather and explore new impression of Nanjing. The final design builds up a connection between the project and surrounding communities through a pedestrian framework, attracting people to enter the public core space-central outdoor plaza where concerts, live performance, musical fountain show and more are presented, not subject to business hours. The spatial organization symbolizes traditional Chinese treasure bowl that gives an ideal relationship between architecture and surroundings. Historical and cultural elements such as Ming Dynasty city wall pattern and dragon spitting water phenomenon inspire the appearance and finish of the project. Breaking the boundary between indoor and outdoor, the whole urban complex focuses on the intimate interaction between people and buildings as well as space and environment.
The sunken plaza with glass canopy shading, waterfalls, pools, trees and flower beds contributes to making a comfortable microenvironment. The design of three waterfalls draws inspiration from nature as well as human technology. Dragon spitting water from the city wall is a unique phenomenon which refers to a large amount of rainwater "discharged" through the city wall.
