POPPY Lounge is a small rental space tucked within a unit of an old multi-tenant building in Nagoya, Japan. Inspired by the fading elegance of Japan’s kissaten cafés, it reimagines an everyday room as a poetic chamber where light, memory, and material culture converge.

The ceiling is clad in 270 hand-cut copper tiles, crafted and installed by local artisans who have long worked on the copper roofs and fittings of shrines and temples in the region—including buildings within the revered Atsuta Shrine complex. These traditional techniques are now increasingly rare, with fewer craftspeople able to carry them forward. Revived here with quiet reverence, the copper diffuses light across the ceiling’s curvature, lending depth and warmth to a space with intentionally low ceilings.

Anchored by a 3-meter reclaimed timber table and deep red velour benches—a color long believed to stretch one’s perception of time—the room unfolds like a modest but intimate stage. The FRP chairs and lamps softly scatter light, while geometric fixtures imbued with a retro-modern character lend a sense of quiet sculpture to the whole. Each object, chosen for its tactile resonance and symbolic precision, contributes to a spatial language meant not to impress but to imprint.

Rather than prioritizing comfort or utility, the design values emotional attentiveness. It is a place for pauses, for hosting without performance. A kissaten for the present era—etched in copper, tuned by silence, and remembered not for what was done inside, but for what lingered.
