OceanLung is an immersive educational wearable that transforms the hidden crisis of ocean deoxygenation into a human learning experience. By reducing airflow in response to pollution, it allows wearers to physically sense the suffocating struggle marine life faces when oxygen disappears from their environment.
Humans rarely notice the air we breathe, yet in the ocean, species such as crabs and fish acutely feel its loss. Since the 1950s, oxygen levels in the sea have fallen by about two percent, creating vast dead zones where life cannot survive. For marine creatures, this means weakened bodies, disrupted lifecycles, and collapsing ecosystems.
OceanLung translates this scientific data into restricted breath, turning environmental knowledge into embodied understanding. This visceral encounter redefines sustainability education—shifting learning from passive observation to active empathy, where information is felt, not just read.
By merging technology and symbolism, OceanLung teaches through sensation, transforming complex science into a direct lesson in compassion and ecological interconnection. Inspired by the form of a crab, claw-shaped silicone air pockets symbolize dissolving shells under acidification, linking human fragility to marine vulnerability.
As a speculative educational tool, OceanLung envisions new futures for learning through design—extending beyond traditional classrooms into multisensory, empathetic engagement. By making the invisible visible, it turns pollution into a shared educational experience, inspiring awareness, dialogue, and collective responsibility to protect our planet’s fragile ecosystems.
