About The Entry

“Bombing the Dragon” (Huo Pang Long) is a distinctive Lantern Festival tradition unique to Miaoli, Taiwan. In the Hakka language, “Huo Pang” means “to bombard,” referring to the ritual of hurling large quantities of firecrackers at a sacred dragon. This act symbolizes the dispelling of evil, the warding off of misfortune, and the flourishing of vitality through intensity.

The 2026 edition, titled “2026 Miaoli Bombing Dragon,” centers on a contemporary reinterpretation of local culture. The design translates the core spirit of “exorcism, blessing, and shared prosperity” into a tangible visual and experiential language. Through brand revitalization, the project reinforces its status as a representative Lantern Festival celebration in Taiwan, while advancing cultural continuity and expanding its international visibility.

The five-day event follows the rhythm of the lunar calendar, establishing a standardized sequence known as the “Seven Rituals of Bombing the Dragon.” This framework encompasses key ceremonial stages, including dragon crafting, eye-dotting, and the welcoming procession. The festival opens with the “Awakening of the Auspicious Dragon” (Eye-Dotting Ceremony), a symbolic act that imbues the dragon with life and marks the official commencement of the celebration.

Public engagement is expanded through a vibrant street parade carnival, culminating in an emotional climax during the “Night of Bombing the Dragon.” Set within a riverside park, the event integrates immersive design strategies—layered firelight intensity, controlled sound rhythms, and carefully choreographed audience circulation—to create a richly multisensory experience.

The performance program features Taiwan’s Coming True Fire Group alongside the intangible cultural heritage tradition of Da Tie Hua from Shanxi, China. By combining high-temperature molten iron displays with the fire dragon spectacle, the event achieves a cross-cultural fusion that transforms the traditional bombing ritual into a highly dynamic and visually compelling narrative.
