W : JC + JCD Window is a photography book by José Carlos Duarte that revolves around the scenography work of José Capela. It features a series of essays by Filipe Figueiredo, Cosimo Chiarelli, João Cabeleira, and Capela himself. This book serves a dual purpose as it functions independently and as part of the installation conceived by the scenographer. Both the installation and the book were integral to the Portuguese representation at the Prague Quadrennial 2019, a pinnacle event in the realm of scenography and theatrical architecture.

Capela’s installation comprised a set of mirrored containers designed to reflect the surrounding landscape. Its form draws inspiration from the viewing mechanisms used in miniature play scenarios housed within. The main challenge was creating a tangible book that seamlessly integrated with the installation while remaining functional. In terms of design, we sought to maximize the book’s surface area and leverage its volumetric nature. We exercised economy in the choice and composition of typography, allowing space for the reflections from the mirrors.

Our aim was to craft an object of remarkable completeness with minimal resources. By folding the title between the spine and cover, we aimed to explore dimensionality and draw a parallel to the concept of a mirror. The typography, thoughtfully arranged to create a mirror effect, showcases Akkurat Mono—a typeface that combines classic sans-serif craftsmanship with a contemporary flair. Its lack of trendiness or extravagance, replaced with reliability and neutrality, facilitates a strong yet unobtrusive integration, leaving room for reflection on this surface. This approach ensures its seamless incorporation into the scenography.
