Architecture project: Eduardo Souto de Moura—Architects

Location: Alijó (Portugal)

Type of Facility: Dam

Programme:

Our involvement in the Foz Tua Dam Hydroelectric Power Plant project encompassed the comprehensive design of the wayfinding and signage system. This included the creation of directional wayfinding signs as well as informative signs to enhance navigational and informational clarity throughout the facility.

Design approach:

In developing the signage for the Foz Tua Dam Hydroelectric Power Plant, we embarked on a design approach that places a premium on accessibility while seamlessly integrating with the architectural vision of the esteemed Eduardo Souto Moura. Our solution involved the incorporation of clear and comprehensible pictograms and prominently legible lettering, catering to the engineers and workers who navigate the facility daily. While visitors represent a smaller demographic, our aim was to ensure both user groups could effortlessly grasp the information presented.

To achieve this, we made the deliberate choice to retain both measurement systems, utilising meters for elevation. This provided intuitive indicators for floor levels and allowed for easy comprehension by non-specialist users. This dual-system approach posed a challenge as it required us to effectively manage additional information within the signage while maintaining a clear and typographically sound composition.

A significant challenge in this project was crafting highly effective and distinctive signage with a low-tech approach, all while adhering to stringent security requirements dictated by the unique characteristics of a structure located 60 meters beneath the Douro River. This called for a meticulous and innovative design strategy, marrying accessibility with the demands of a high-security environment.

Feedback: Effortless, practical, exceptionally functional, and seamlessly integrated into the structure. - Eduardo Souto de Moura, a renowned architect and recipient of the Pritzker Award
