The "Lead" entrance public art installation is located at the main gate of Nanhai Bilingual School in Lili Water Town, Foshan, Guangdong Province.
The designer deconstructed the traditional Lingnan architectural details and integrated the classic double-sloped roof into the overall design of the project. They used the Lu Ban lock device, one of the core components of Lingnan traditional architecture, to create a modular horizontal and vertical matrix framework. These individual components form the overall double-sloped roof shape of Lingnan ancient architecture. When viewed from the street, pavilions overlap, eaves conceal, and the spirit and essence of Chinese architecture subtly blend into the fabric of the modern urban area.
The Lu Ban lock, with its motto 'every joint has its reason, and everywhere there is no gap,' is not only the crystallization of traditional Chinese craftsmanship but also an indispensable treasure within the He Luo culture. The designer has chosen it as the core design element of the project, employing modern techniques and technology to faithfully recreate the ancient Chinese artisanal spirit. This approach not only maximizes the breaking down of practical and artistic boundaries but also revitalizes traditional craftsmanship within the structural framework of modern architectural spaces, breathing new life into it.
The "Lead" art installation takes inspiration from traditional wooden structures, using 304# stainless steel square tubes as the base material. The open design of the wooden beams and frames embraces the school's buildings, vegetation, and the flow of people and traffic outside, allowing the humanistic atmosphere of the campus to blend with the openness of the city. The entrance is no longer a spatial barrier but a medium that bridges the spirit of different blocks.
Leveraging the characteristic planar design of Chinese tradition, the "Lead" art installation features a regular and clear structural framework with a well-defined central axis. Like distant pavilions and towers in a scroll painting, they appear faintly in the shadow of clouds, mingling with the foliage and hidden within painted roofs and pavilions. This forms a contrasting yet complementary relationship with the clearly delineated modern reinforced concrete structures, creating a harmonious coexistence.
