4. What does “design” mean to you?
To FORO Studio, "design" is far more than just creating visually appealing or functional spaces. Design is a powerful tool for transformation and storytelling. It is the art of crafting meaningful experiences that evoke emotions, engage the senses, and leave a lasting impact.
Design is about understanding the needs, aspirations, and unique identities of our clients and translating them into tangible and immersive environments. It is a collaborative process that involves listening, observing, and empathising to create spaces that resonate with people on a deeper level.
Design is also about solving problems and addressing challenges. It is the art of finding innovative solutions, whether it's optimising space utilisation, enhancing user experiences, or integrating sustainability principles. We believe that great design is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, efficient, and environmentally conscious.
Furthermore, design is a form of communication. It speaks a visual language that can convey ideas, narratives, and brand messages. It has the power to connect people, evoke emotions, and create memorable experiences. We strive to use design as a medium to tell compelling stories and foster meaningful connections between spaces, users, and their surroundings.
At FORO Studio, design is deeply rooted in our belief that every space has the potential to inspire, uplift, and transform lives. We approach each project with a holistic mindset, considering the social, cultural, and environmental contexts to create designs that are not only visually striking but also socially responsible and sustainable.
Design to FORO Studio is a holistic and transformative process that goes beyond aesthetics. It is about creating meaningful experiences, solving problems, communicating messages, and making a positive impact on the world. We embrace the power of design to shape emotions, behaviours, and environments, and we are dedicated to crafting spaces that leave a lasting impression and enrich the lives of those who experience them.
5. What’s your favorite kind of design and why?
At FORO Studio, we have a deep appreciation for a wide range of design disciplines. While it's difficult to choose a single favourite kind of design, we are particularly drawn to designs that seamlessly integrate creativity, functionality, and innovation.
One area that truly captivates us is architectural design. Our team is passionate about shaping the built environment and creating spaces that enhance human experiences. We take pride in designing structures that harmonise with their surroundings, respond to cultural contexts, and prioritise sustainability. Our focus on blending aesthetics, functionality, and sustainable practices sets us apart in the field of architectural design.
Another realm we find compelling is interior design. We believe that well-designed interiors can transform spaces into immersive and inspiring environments. Whether it's residential, commercial, or hospitality projects, we enjoy curating interiors that evoke specific moods, reflect brand identities, and engage users on a personal level. Our meticulous attention to detail in selecting furniture, materials, colours, and lighting ensures cohesive and captivating interiors.
In addition to our passion for architectural and interior design, we also place great emphasis on CMF (Color, Material, and Finish) design research. We recognize the significant role that CMF plays in creating impactful and harmonious designs. Our team conducts thorough research to stay at the forefront of CMF trends, exploring innovative materials, finishes, and colour palettes.
CMF design research allows us to push the boundaries of creativity and find unique ways to incorporate texture, colour, and materiality into our projects. We delve into the psychology of colour, considering how different hues evoke specific emotions and contribute to the overall ambience of a space. Through meticulous material selection, we ensure that our designs not only look visually stunning but also offer durability, functionality, and tactile pleasure.
By staying informed about the latest CMF trends, we can bring a fresh perspective to our designs, creating spaces that feel contemporary, timeless, and relevant. Our research process involves exploring a wide range of sources, attending industry events, collaborating with suppliers, and experimenting with samples and prototypes. We believe that every detail matters and that the thoughtful integration of CMF elements elevates the overall design experience.
6. To you, what makes a “good” design?
At FORO Studio, we are guided by the belief that a "good" design is one that successfully combines functionality, aesthetics, and purpose. We prioritise simplicity, longevity, and a deep understanding of user needs.
A "good" design is functional, meaning it effectively serves its intended purpose. It should provide practical solutions and enhance the user experience. We strive to create designs that are intuitive, ergonomic, and seamlessly integrate with the daily lives of users. Functionality is key in ensuring that our designs not only look visually appealing but also fulfil their intended functions.
A "good" design is also characterised by its timelessness and longevity. We believe in creating designs that withstand the test of time, avoiding trends that quickly fade away. By focusing on enduring design principles, we ensure that our creations remain relevant and continue to inspire for years to come. We aim to design spaces and objects that possess timeless elegance and adaptability, transcending fleeting fashions.
Moreover, a "good" design is purpose-driven. It goes beyond superficial aesthetics and addresses specific needs and contexts. We take a thoughtful and research-driven approach to understand the unique requirements and aspirations of our clients and users. By deeply understanding the purpose and desired outcomes, we can design spaces that are not only visually pleasing but also create meaningful and impactful experiences.
Additionally, sustainability is a fundamental aspect of our definition of a "good" design. We consider the environmental impact of our design choices and strive to incorporate sustainable practices and materials into our projects. Designing with sustainability in mind ensures that our creations have a positive and lasting effect on both people and the planet.
7. How did you come up with the idea for your award-winning design?
Our design was born from a combination of careful research, creative exploration, and a deep understanding of the project's objectives and context. The process began with extensive analysis and immersion into the project's requirements, client vision, and site conditions.
We examined precedents and case studies, drawing inspiration from innovative designs and best practices across various industries. With a solid foundation of knowledge and inspiration, we embarked on a collaborative and iterative design process. Our team engaged in brainstorming sessions, sketching, and conceptualising ideas that responded to the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the project.
We embraced a multidisciplinary approach, involving architects, interior designers, and stylists to explore different perspectives and push the boundaries of creativity. Throughout the design development, we continuously refined and iterated upon our concepts, incorporating feedback from the client and stakeholders. We paid close attention to every detail, ensuring that our design not only met the functional requirements but also conveyed a strong aesthetic and emotional appeal.
Receiving recognition for our design through awards further validated our approach and confirmed that our design resonated with industry experts. It served as a testament to the hard work, creativity, and attention to detail that went into developing the concept and bringing it to life.
8. What was your main source of inspiration for this design?
The inspiration behind the concept of Ballard & Fant is rooted in a memorable journey where we experienced the interconnectedness of body care and socialisation within a specific place: the hammam. Our trip to Marrakech, Morocco, left a lasting impression and served as a significant source of inspiration for the design. Marrakech, a city renowned for its captivating contrasts, provided us with the guiding principles for creating the colour palette.
Colour is a powerful communication tool that we cherish, and in this case, we played with highly saturated tones such as brick red and electric blue, shades that punctuate the cityscape in various ways. The palette we developed is a harmonious contrast between opposites, with warm tones alternating with cool tones, creating a perfect balance even in the chromatic accents, where vibrant yellow is juxtaposed with soft blue. To unify the interactions among these hues, we chose a warm and discreet beige, reminiscent of the desert sand, to serve as the background.
The rich cultural experience in Marrakech and the captivating colour palette derived from the city's contrasting elements guided our design concept for Ballard & Fant. By incorporating these inspirations, we aimed to create a space that evokes a sense of warmth, vibrancy, and sensory indulgence, reminiscent of the unique atmosphere we experienced in the hammams of Marrakech.
9. Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
Our country, Italy, and its rich cultural heritage have a profound impact on our design process at FORO Studio. Italy, and particularly Milan, has long been recognized as a global hub for design, architecture, and artistic expression. The influence of our cultural heritage is ingrained in our approach to design, guiding our creativity, and shaping our design philosophy.
Italy's design legacy is characterised by a strong emphasis on craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a celebration of aesthetics. We draw inspiration from the timeless beauty of Italian art and architecture, as well as the traditions of master artisans who have perfected their crafts over generations. This heritage instils in us a deep appreciation for quality, elegance, and refinement.
Moreover, our surroundings in Milan, with its bustling design districts, historic landmarks, and avant-garde exhibitions, constantly fuel our creativity. The city's vibrant atmosphere, where contemporary design seamlessly coexists with centuries-old architecture, serves as a constant source of inspiration. Milan Design Week, the Salone del Mobile, and other renowned design events hosted in the city offer us opportunities to connect with fellow designers, discover innovative trends, and explore new design concepts.
Furthermore, Italy's cultural heritage places a strong emphasis on human connection, community, and the notion of "la dolce vita." These values influence our design process by placing the user experience, well-being, and social interactions at the forefront of our considerations. We aim to create spaces that foster a sense of belonging, encourage meaningful connections, and enhance the quality of life for those who experience our designs.

This award is a testament to their hard work, expertise, and passion for design.
11. Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the London Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
This project represents a novelty in the city as it combines two distinct concepts that were previously not found together in the world of beauty services: a beauty salon and a lounge bar. While the combination of a beauty salon and lounge bar has been explored in other parts of the world, there was a void in Milan for a space that offered both functions in a comprehensive way, which Ballard & Fant now provides.
The project aimed to create an alternative approach to accessing a range of beauty services, including highly specialised treatments, while combining them with the experience of a cocktail bar. The concept of an agender aesthetic was carefully designed to make the space inclusive and suitable for anyone seeking beauty treatments, rather than catering solely to a specific feminine aesthetic as many beauty centres tend to do. In essence, Ballard & Fant offers a space where individuals can attend to their beauty needs while enjoying excellent drinks.
We chose to enter this project into the London Design Awards because we believed it exemplified our commitment to innovative and transformative design. The fusion of beauty services and a lounge bar, along with the inclusive agender aesthetic, made Ballard & Fant a unique and groundbreaking concept in the beauty places offered by the city. We wanted to showcase how the project pushed boundaries, challenged conventions and provided a fresh and engaging experience for its users.
By entering this project into the London Design Awards, we sought to highlight the thoughtfulness and creativity that went into the design process. We wanted to share our vision of reimagining traditional beauty spaces and offering a new way for individuals to engage with beauty treatments, in a space that also encourages social interaction and relaxation.
12. What were the main challenges you faced during the design process, and how did you overcome them?
During the design process, we encountered several significant challenges that required careful management and creative problem-solving. One of the main challenges was integrating two distinct entities, which are typically independent, within the same space. This presented complexities in managing flows and technical areas. The regulations governing both the beauty salon and the lounge bar were specific and binding, making the selection of the space and the distribution of areas particularly challenging.
To overcome these challenges, we approached the design process with meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of the regulatory requirements for each identity of Ballard & Fant.
We carefully chose the space and strategically divided the areas to ensure a harmonious coexistence.
The front area, with its street-facing entrance and showcase, was dedicated to the cocktail bar and lounge, while the more reserved area at the back was designated for the beauty centre. Creating a seamless connection between the two areas was essential, and we achieved this through a visually striking element: a series of blue glass portals that guide the gaze towards the beauty area. This transparent barrier allows for an intelligible view of the beauty space, adding depth and perspective to the overall design. Furthermore, this liminal space not only contributes to the interior's theatricality but also serves as a focal point for the facial bar and shop functions. It delineates the perimeter of two intimate and cosy lounges, providing a more private and intimate dimension for visitors.
Throughout the design process, our team collaborated closely, leveraging our expertise and experience to find innovative solutions. We conducted thorough research, consulted with experts in the industry, and carefully navigated the regulatory landscape to ensure compliance without compromising the design vision.
Despite the complexities, we successfully overcame the challenges by approaching them with a keen eye for detail, a deep understanding of the specific requirements, and a commitment to delivering a space that seamlessly integrates the beauty salon and lounge bar elements. The result is a design that exudes elegance, functionality, and a sense of exclusivity, aligning with the posh tone that defines Ballard & Fant's unique character.
13. How do you think winning this award will impact your future as a designer?

This increased visibility can attract a broader range of clients, partners, and projects, enabling us to expand our reach and tackle more diverse and exciting design challenges.

Our design approach goes beyond aesthetics and functionality. We believe that every element within a space has the power to convey a narrative and evoke emotions. To achieve this, we conducted extensive research in CMF, exploring materials, colours, and finishes that would enhance the overall ambience and create a unique sensory experience.
By carefully selecting and integrating CMF elements, we were able to craft a space that tells a compelling story, immersing customers in a distinct atmosphere and setting the stage for a memorable experience.
