London Design Awards interviewee - Xingcheng Zhu

1. Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

Hi, I am Xingcheng Zhu. I have more than 4 years of UXUI design experience. I studied in Loughborough University. Later I worked for PwC and Uber China before. I designed many different types of Business end products including B2B platforms, CMS and official websites. Also, many products in our daily life.

2. What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

Because I love design and the excitement it brings me when creating something new. I have enjoyed drawing and depicting beautiful things since childhood. When I entered university, I was initially on a path in the science and engineering field, but I wanted to combine it with design, so I chose architecture as my major. However, the work in architecture didn't turn out as interesting and fulfilling as I had imagined, even though I appreciated architectural aesthetics. As a result, I embarked on the path of user experience and product design.

3. Tell us more about your agency/company, job profile, and what you do.

My company is PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), which is one of the Big Four accounting firms globally, and it also provides consulting services. I work as a Senior Product Designer, responsible for the design of low-code and digital products on the platform. Additionally, I am in charge of designing and updating the design system.

4. What does “design” mean to you?

For me, design means solving problems, making the users feel a sense of beauty when they see the product, and even making them feel that life is full of hope. Therefore, I believe that this design is a very good design.

5. What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

My favorite designs are those that have excellent interactive experiences and aesthetics. These products do not feel cumbersome to use, and they are also friendly to the elderly, children, and individuals with physical disabilities.

6. To you, what makes a “good” design?

A "good" design is one that seamlessly blends functionality and aesthetics, delivering a positive user experience. It caters to the needs and preferences of its users while remaining simple and intuitive to use. Accessibility is a key aspect, ensuring it's friendly to people of all ages and abilities. Additionally, a good design embraces innovation and sustainability, making it adaptable to changing trends and environmentally conscious. Ultimately, a "good" design forms an emotional connection with users, evoking positive feelings and loyalty.

7. How did you come up with the idea for your award-winning design?

I like to observe things in life, such as the award-winning works, the chair is inspired by streams and branches, the app is inspired by the surrounding environment.
So I think to do a good design or a good designer, you have to look at all the things around you and try to integrate them into the design.

8. What was your main source of inspiration for this design?

Nature, people in life, then websites and books.

9. Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

Yes, my culture has given me a lot of inspiration. China has a history of five thousand years, and people have left behind many valuable things worth learning in their production and daily life, such as wood carving, bamboo weaving, Zen culture, and so on. It aligns with the minimalist concept I want to pursue

10. Congratulations! As the winner of the London Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

It was nice to be recognized, but I also saw a lot of excellent works, which also aroused my desire to keep learning. I want to see more, learn more, and be inspired

11. Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the London Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

Because I found everyday objects around me boring, I wanted to create objects that were both aesthetic and functional. Another work is to show the concern for the environment. Nowadays, the environmental problem is very serious, and various countries are solving it, and individuals should also take responsibility for it.

12. What were the main challenges you faced during the design process, and how did you overcome them?

During the design process, I encountered several challenges. The primary ones were balancing aesthetics with functionality, ensuring a seamless user experience, and addressing diverse user needs. To overcome these obstacles, I conducted thorough research and user testing, gathering valuable feedback to refine the design. Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team helped incorporate innovative ideas and find practical solutions. Iterative design processes allowed me to continually refine the product. By staying receptive to feedback, remaining open-minded, and embracing creative problem-solving, I successfully navigated these challenges and delivered a well-rounded design that met both user expectations and project goals.
