2. What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?
Driven by my interests in painting, history, literature, geography, and more, I consciously decided to pursue a career in design and art. I specifically chose to study landscape architecture design at Tongji University and later continued my education at Harvard University to explore the intersection of nature, human experiences, and the built environment.
Having family members who were architects, designers, and artists further fueled my passion for these fields. Becoming a designer/artist was a natural progression for me. It allows me to express my creativity, merge my diverse interests, and make meaningful contributions to the world. Through design and art, I can create immersive experiences, tell stories, and shape environments that evoke emotions, inspire connections, and leave a lasting impact.
3. Tell us more about your agency/company, job profile, and what you do.
Shimin Cao is a co-founder of Studio RE+N, an acclaimed design studio established in 2023. Based in Lishui, Zhejiang, and Boston, our team consists of top designers from prestigious universities such as Harvard, Tsinghua, and Tongji. We specialize in exceptional architectural, urban planning, and landscape design services for clients worldwide.
Our design philosophy, "Re-evolve Narrative," drives us to reimagine spaces by infusing them with new stories. We prioritize the integration of local social, economic, and cultural characteristics, seamlessly combining traditional materials with modern technologies to create personalized user experiences.
Studio RE+N offers a wide range of bespoke services, including boutique architecture, landscape design, urban renewal, interior design, and product and installation design. We believe in close collaboration and unwavering dedication to excellence, as we strive to create beautiful spaces that enrich society.
4. What does “design” mean to you?
Design is a medium through which I can understand social, political, economic, cultural, and ecological aspects. Design is also a form of expression, and I enjoy combining different knowledge to create new products.
5. What’s your favorite kind of design and why?
My favorite kind of design is one that connects with the site context and achieves harmony with nature. I believe that a design that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings and respects the natural environment not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also promotes sustainability. By understanding the unique characteristics of the site and its ecosystem, I can create designs that not only blend in with the surroundings but also contribute positively to the overall balance and well-being of the environment. This type of design brings a sense of unity and coherence, creating spaces that are not only visually pleasing but also functional and in tune with their natural surroundings.
6. To you, what makes a “good” design?
I value designs that effectively integrate diverse factors and constraints. Designing entails considering aspects such as site context, geographical ecology, cultural influences, economic considerations, and more. The challenge for designers lies in skillfully managing and harmonizing these conditions to create cohesive and successful designs.
7. How did you come up with the idea for your award-winning design?
The project "Netscape" originated from observations of residual spaces within the community. We recognized the need for flexible landscapes and installations to utilize these spaces effectively. On the other hand, "The Tower on Ruins" focused on researching methods to preserve and utilize historical heritage sites.
8. What was your main source of inspiration for this design?
Observing life, traveling, and reading.
9. Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
I was born in Changsha, a historical ancient city in China with a history of three thousand years. It is rich in historical relics, such as bronze artifacts, bamboo slips, and more. I have a great fondness for visiting museums and art galleries as they inspire me with their history, stories, and patterns.
10. Congratulations! As the winner of the London Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
Winning an award for me signifies the need to continue working hard and accepting greater challenges.
11. Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the London Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
My projects Netscape and The Tower on Ruins have been awarded the London Design Awards. Both projects have presented innovative strategies for utilizing public spaces.
12. What were the main challenges you faced during the design process, and how did you overcome them?
During the design process, one of the main challenges I faced was adapting to the different cultural contexts in various countries. Designing in different countries requires a deep understanding of the local culture, traditions, values, and preferences. Overcoming this challenge involved a combination of research, learning, and exploration.
13. How do you think winning this award will impact your future as a designer?
Winning this award would have a significant impact on my future as a designer. Firstly, it would provide recognition and validation of my skills and abilities, boosting my confidence and credibility within the industry. This recognition could lead to increased visibility and exposure, opening doors to new opportunities and collaborations.

16. Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?
In design, repetitive and monotonous tasks can be replaced by AI, which means that designers are now required to possess higher levels of creativity and comprehensive abilities.
17. What advice do you have for aspiring designers who want to create award-winning designs?
Designing things that one is personally interested in, using design as a means of self-expression, and paying attention to the things happening around oneself.
18. What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?
Engaging in various activities such as competitions, conferences, and public speaking engagements.
19. Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
Design is not an easy task.
20. Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Mikyoung Kim has been a significant inspiration in my life. Her innovative approach to landscape architecture and urban design has greatly influenced my own creative journey. I admire her ability to seamlessly integrate nature and the built environment, creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also socially and environmentally sustainable.
